Dr. Bonnie Ward retired to Summit County in 2009 after a 40-year career in education in Maryland. She was a high school math and computer science teacher, mathematics curriculum supervisor, director of technology, associate superintendent, and superintendent of schools, working in both large and small school districts.
Because of her many roles in education, she brought to Summit County a depth of knowledge about educational leadership that has served our community well. Dr. Ward served for four years on the Summit School District Board of Education, holding roles as both president and vice president. She has received awards including The Summit Foundation Philanthropy Award for Outstanding Citizen and the prestigious “Celebrate Literacy Award” from the Colorado Council International Reading Association (CCIRA) for her tireless efforts to promote literacy in Summit County. She has been a longtime mentor of high school and college students through the Pre-Collegiate and Mountain Mentors Programs, helping first-generation students on their path to college. She is a member of the Summit School District STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) committee. She works with all Summit schools parent teacher associations on partnerships to provide grants to teachers. As the vice chair of the Education Foundation of the Summit, she has worked to raise over $1.3 million since 2010 through donations, grants, and fundraising efforts to directly support Summit School District’s teachers and students.
“I don’t think that in any community there’s anything more important than public education. It’s almost a marker of the health of the community.” Dr. Bonnie Ward.
We honor Bonnie as our 2025 Woman of Distinction: Now.
