Preserve the Past
Preservation and education have been the core values of the Summit Historical Society since 1966, with the stories of Summit County beginning long before statehood in 1876. We are passionate about sharing this rich history through our 8,000+ artifacts, including buildings, photographs, diaries, maps, and many more primary items.
We are launching our 2025 Fall Fundraising Campaign with a generous match from the Board of $13,500, doubling the impact of every donation made during the campaign from now through Colorado Gives Day on December 9.
Your contributions are vital in continuing our work of preservation and education. Our accomplishments in 2025 so far include:
- Old Dillon Schoolhouse and Rice Family Barn were placed on State Register of Historic Places
- Museum on the Move at student and community events
- Historic Landscapes Publication: Six books to date highlighting townsites and ghost towns of Summit County authored by Bill Fountain and Dr. Sandra Mather
- Community events including boat tours, 15 Dillon Farmers Markets, historic hikes, 6th annual Vintage Baseball Game, Women of Distinction Luncheon, guest speakers, and Summit Historic Park tours
- Educational programs for ALL Summit County students including the popular Mining Traveling Trunk
For 59 years we have been a people’s organization with our Vision: Exploring the past, to better understand the present, and positively influence the future. We hope you will help us meet our $13,500 match by giving today!
We appreciate your support!

Donating Artifacts
Since its inception in 1966, the Summit Historical Society has been the proud keeper of historic sites. We also keep over 5,000 three-dimensional and archival artifacts that tell the historical stories of Summit County, then and now. This collection includes clothing, photographs, architectural drawings, manuscripts, personal papers and business/industrial papers. It also includes documents, advertising, locally published newspapers, scrapbooks, bound volumes, and slides. Our objects date back to the mid 19th century to the present with Summit County provenance.
To donate objects, contact us us by phone at (970) 468-2207, or by email.
