SUMMARY:Guided Hike to Kremmling Ammonite Fossil Site
DESCRIPTION:BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! \n\nSHS is excited to bring back this popular hike to our members:\nThe BLM Kremmling Field Office will lead us on an interpretive hike of the 160-acre Research Natural Area containing fossils of over 100 species of marine creatures\, including giant ammonites\, from the late Cretaceous Period (72 million years ago) when Colorado was covered by a vast\, shallow ocean.\nPlan to be gone most of the day\nBring lunch and plenty of water — there will be virtually no shade.\nBe prepared for changing weather.  Cool\, wet weather can blow in on a moment’s notice\nHIGH-CLEARANCE Vehicles Highly Recommended\, with at least front-wheel-drive;  30-minute drive to fossil site is over rocky terrain.\nIf you do not have a high-clearance vehicle\, please email us at matt@summithistorical.org and we will try to place you in another vehicle.\nEVENT MAY BE CANCELED WITH SHORT NOTICE DUE TO FORECASTS OF INCLEMENT WEATHER\nPLEASE CHECK BACK HERE FOR UPDATES AS THE EVENT DATE APPROACHES\n\nMEETING PLACE AND TIME: \n\nMeet at the Dillon 1883 Schoolhouse Museum (403 LaBonte Street\, Dillon) no later than 8:30am\nWe will pool riders together in high-clearance vehicles and then caravan to the BLM Kremmling Field Office\, arriving by 9:30am\nWe will plan to be back in Dillon by 4:00pm but this is subject to change; plan accordingly\nPLEASE NOTE:  THIS IS A NO-PET EVENT\n\n(photo credit: fossilera.com)

CLICK HERE to join \n\n  \n*** DEADLINE FOR TICKET PURCHASE:  12pm on Friday\, September 23rd *** \n__________________________________________________________________ \nClick Here for Directions to Red Tail Ranch \nWritten Directions: \n\nDue to construction on Coyne Valley Road you will be directed to Airport Road via Valley Brook Street.  \nFrom Farmers Corner (Swan Mountain Road at Highway 9 near Summit High School) head south on Highway 9 toward Breckenridge for about 5 miles.\nTurn right at the traffic light on Valley Brook Street.  \nAt the stop sign turn right (north) onto Airport Road and follow it to the end\, about 1.3 miles.  \nTurn left onto the dirt road.  You will see the sign for Red Tail Ranch.  \nFollow the dirt road up and around the bend.\nGo thru the gate\, and follow the road until you reach the barn.  Someone will be there to direct you to the parking area.\n\nPlease arrive at 9:00am.  The hike will begin shortly after.  We will provide lunch and enjoy a wine tasting upon your return. \n  \n
