SUMMARY:Historic Hike Series: Ethnobotany Hike with Mark Rubash
DESCRIPTION:Join us when we hike with Mark Rubash Call 970-468-2207 if there are any online ticket ordering issues \nThis hike will focus on plants of the area and how they were used by those who came before us. We will look at (smell\, feel and taste as well!) plant species and their uses as food and medicine; in addition\, many plants were used for utilitarian purposes and some had special spiritual significance. The main focus is on the Native American peoples of past centuries\, but Europeans also found some special uses. This will be an easy/moderate hike of about 3-4 miles with some elevation gain\, depending on our particular route (1000 foot maximum).\n\n\nDate: Tuesday August 18 \nTime: 8:30 AM to Noon \nLocation: Acorn Creek Trailhead\, north of Silverthorne \nCost: $25.00 per person\, Registration required

We’ll look at the foods\, preparation methods\, servingware\, and customs around campfires\, hornos\, manos & metates\, and cast iron as we explore the seasonality of foods and transitory nature of the hearth as people moved into\, out of\, and around what became the state of Colorado in 1876.\n\n\nLight snacks provided.\n\n\n\nDr. Rachael Storm is Head of Curatorial Services & Curator of Business and Industry at History Colorado. She grew up in Iowa\, spending summers on her grandparents’ farm and worked at a USDA seed genebank prior to earning her PhD in the history of agricultural capitalism at the University of Delaware.\n\nHer recent book\, Setting Colorado’s Table: 150 Years of Agricultural Legacy\, celebrates the history of farming and ranching in the Centennial State and was just released as part of the 250th/150th commemoration of US nationhood and Colorado statehood.\nIf you have any have any issue with registration or have questions\, contact us at debbie@summithistorical.org or call at 970-468-2207.
