Museum Guide

Guides share the stories of the 1883 Dillon Schoolhouse, the 1885 Myers cabin and the 1930s Honeymoon Cabin. How much different was school in 19th century? What did it take to homestead? How did women experience the frontier?

Boat Guide

Each summer, the Society partners with the Dillon Marina to offer historic cruises on Lake Dillon. Boat guides share the stories of the construction of the dam and Roberts Tunnel, the moving of the Town of Dillon, and the wider story of Summit County.

Dillon Farmers Market

Are you outgoing? Have a passion for history and want to share it? The Society has a booth each week at the Dillon Farmers Market! Volunteers help set-up and take down the booth, as well as selling books, recruiting members and engaging with visitors.

Harriett Bobo Volunteer of the Year Award



Harriett Bobo (October 10, 1942-July 14, 2018) was a great friend and tremendous volunteer for the Summit Historical Society. She dedicated countless volunteer hours to many of Summit County cultural and environmental organizations. She moved to Summit County in 2002 after her retirement and became involved with the National Repertory Orchestra, the Summit Foundation, the Summit Concert Band, led hikes for the Friends of the Dillon Ranger District, was an usher at the Lake Dillon Theater, and was a major donor and volunteer for the Summit Historical Society.

Harriett’s life exemplified volunteerism at its best. To honor her memory, the Society initiated this award, to be given annually at the volunteer appreciation event at the end of the summer season.

Recipients

2021 – Ann Cross

Ann tirelessly and efficiently inventoried photographs, maps, and bottle collections during the past year.. she also volunteers at the Dillon Farmers Market, and our school programs.

2020 – Ken Torrington

Ken served on the board as secretary ensuring that our records are accurate. He also volunteered his summer hours developing the Peru Creek tour and showing how to find silver, Galena, and maybe even gold,

2019 – Bruce Queen

Bruce put in over 1,000 hours improving the grounds of the Dillon Campus including the pollinator garden and the homestead garden plus many hours on the interior and exterior of the 1883 Dillon Schoolhouse.

2018 – Carolyn Harner & Jean Adams

Carolyn Harner has served as a Lake Dillon Historical Boat Tour guide for a number of years. She has often filled in when a schedule guide was unable to lead a tour. She has a “can-do” attitude whenever a service Opportunity presents itself. Her passion for music benefited the Society when she took on the task of having the 1885 piano in the Schoolhouse tuned. She has been a volunteer coordinator for the schoolhouse, and is often filling in as a guide when no one else is available.

Jean Adams moved to Colorado to be near family in Denver and Dillon. She came to an SHS ice cream social in 2011, had a great time with the community and joined the Society. The next summer, she trained as a boat guide and schoolhouse docent. Time between schoolhouse tours gave her time to read from the Society’s publications. Her favorite books are Lula and Windows to the Past.
